For times when you’re in a rush and looking for something to prepare for your lunch meal of the day, luncheon meat may seem like a simple option.  Making a classic sandwich on whole grain takes just minutes to prepare and should provide you with balanced nutrition, correct?

Before you go off digging into your noon-time sandwich, there are a few points to keep in mind with deli meat.

Major Nutrients Found In Deli Meat

While the nutritional table above shows turkey deli meat, it’s important to be aware that the variety you choose will alter the nutritional content.  Chicken and turkey do tend to be the varieties that contain the least fat so what you should always try and select.  Ham is next up on the list and if you do make an effort to purchase the ‘low fat’ ham it will not contain much fat but if you don’t, you may get more than you bargained for.

Be especially careful when selecting bologna, salami, pepperoni, or any type of beef based deli meats as these typically do contain very high levels of total fat as well as saturated fat.

The nice thing about deli meat is that it is high in protein content but the drawback is that it’ll be very high in sodium content.  Often deli meat is even worse than canned foods for sodium content so you should either select a low sodium variety or use it sparingly.

Storing/Selecting

When selecting deli meat you’ll typically purchase it fresh so that won’t be an issue unless you are buying a pre-packaged variety.  If that’s the case, aim to select deli meat that has been packaged no more than 2-3 days prior to the date of that day.  Deli meat will be best when consumed within the week so you want it as fresh as possible.

Be sure to keep the deli meat in the fridge as soon as you get home, or if you prefer you can place it in the freezer for future use.

Eat It With:

Deli meat can be eaten as part of a sandwich, on a homemade pizza, or used to create any type of wrap.
